Ask a small food or drinks producer what they pay for printed pouches and you will hear the same story. The pouches themselves are affordable. The print is what hurts, because conventional pouch printing carries plate costs and minimum orders that only make sense at volumes a small producer does not have.

So most settle for one of two compromises: plain pouches with a stuck-on label, or a large order of printed pouches for a range they hope does not change. Digital pouch printing exists to remove that choice.

What is digital pouch printing?

Digital pouch printing means printing artwork directly onto premade stand-up pouches using a digital press, with no printing plates and no minimum order quantity.

Because there are no plates, every pouch in a run can carry different artwork at the same cost. You print the quantity you need, when you need it, and change the design as often as you like.

How can a printer print onto a finished pouch?

The pouch has to be built for it. Standard pouches are not, which is why this has historically been a trade-only service.

OKI partnered with the specialist media manufacturer SIHL to develop synthetic resealable stand-up pouches engineered to run through OKI Pro 9 Series printers. The pouch passes through the machine like a heavy sheet, takes toner on its front and back faces, and comes out finished. There is no separate laminating or converting step.

The pouches stand upright on an oval welded base, and an optional zipper keeps the contents resealable. You are printing onto retail-grade packaging, not assembling it.

What products suit printed stand-up pouches?

The resealable stand-up pouch has become the default format for a wide range of products:

  • Coffee and tea
  • Confectionery, sweets and snacks
  • Spices, herbs and dry ingredients
  • Protein powders and sports supplements
  • Pet food and pet treats
  • Cosmetics and bath products
  • Seeds and garden sundries

If your product is dry, pourable or packaged in portions, a stand-up pouch probably suits it. For any food application, check the pouch specification against your product with us before committing, so the right media is matched to what is going inside it.

Why not just put a label on a plain pouch?

For a first market stall, a label is the right answer. It is cheap to start and easy to change.

The limits show as you grow. Labelling is manual work on every single pouch, which does not scale. A label covers one panel while the rest of the pouch stays blank. And on a shelf next to retail brands, a labelled pouch reads as homemade, which sets a ceiling on the price you can ask.

Direct printing removes the application labour entirely and uses the full front and back of the pouch, which is what makes a small producer’s packaging look like a brand rather than a batch.

What does no minimum order actually change?

More than the cash tied up in stock, although it starts there.

  • Seasonal ranges become viable. A Christmas blend or a summer edition no longer needs a pallet of packaging that is scrap in January.
  • Variants multiply for free. Six flavours no longer means six print runs and six minimums. It means six artwork files.
  • New products can be tested. Print fifty pouches, put the product on sale, and let the result decide whether it earns a place in the range.
  • Own-brand and personalisation open up. Short runs for a retail customer, an event or a corporate order become jobs worth taking rather than jobs to decline.
  • Nothing is written off. A recipe tweak, a weight change or a rebrand makes old artwork obsolete, not old stock.

The stockroom of obsolete printed packaging is the pouch equivalent of the drawer of unused labels. Most producers have one, and it is the honest measure of what minimum orders really cost.

How does the cost compare with buying printed pouches?

Conventional pouch printing prices the way all plate-based printing does. The plates and set-up are a fixed cost per design, so the unit price only becomes attractive when that cost is spread across thousands of pouches, and every design multiplies it.

Digital printing has no set-up, so the cost per pouch is flat: the pouch itself, plus toner, whether you print twenty or two thousand. On long runs of a single design, conventional printing wins on unit price. On short runs, frequent changes and multi-variant ranges, digital wins, and it is not close once wasted stock is counted.

The honest comparison is your real annual usage per design, including what you would write off, against a per-pouch cost based on your own artwork. Ask us for a coverage-based estimate rather than working from headline toner yields, because full-coverage pouch artwork uses considerably more toner than a standard page.

What equipment do you need?

An OKI Pro 9 Series printer and the SIHL pouch media, which you can browse in our pouches range. Artwork comes straight from the standard design tools, so there is no specialist software to learn.

If your pouch designs sit on white panels, four-colour printing covers it. For designs that print onto kraft-look, coloured or clear pouch faces, you want the fifth station carrying white toner, which lays a white base under the colour so the design reads as intended. That is the Pro9541dn or the Pro9542dn, and it is worth deciding at the start because it is the one capability you cannot add later.

Running costs are the pouches themselves and toner. There are no plates to buy and no origination charges to amortise, which is the entire point.

How do you get started?

Send us your artwork and we will print it onto a pouch, so the first thing you judge is a finished sample of your own packaging rather than a specification sheet.

Bring a rough idea of your range too: how many products, how many variants, how often designs change, and what you currently pay per printed pouch at the volumes you really order. Those numbers usually make the decision on their own.
